Cajuns win 2009 fall finale at Carter Plantation
SPRINGFIELD – The third time was the charm – in two different ways – for UL’s Ragin’ Cajun golf team to wrap up its 2009 fall season.
The Cajuns got three rounds of par or better from its five-man lineup in the final round of the fall-season-ending Carter Plantation Intercollegiate, and used that balance to take a one-stroke victory over first-day leader Rice in the 13-team tournament.
The Cajuns had finished third and second in the Carter Plantation event the last two seasons. More importantly, however, UL had finished last in its two October tournament outings – a 16th of 16 teams at the Memphis Intercollegiate and a 14th of 14 teams at the David Toms Invitational hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge.
“The past two weeks, we’ve had some frustrating results,” said UL coach Theo Sliman, who claimed his first win of the year after the Cajuns had two team victories in his first season in 2008-09. “But today showed what these guys are made of. They got after it out there.”
The Cajuns entered the final loop of the 7,104-yard par-72 Carter Plantation course trailing Rice by one shot and in a tie with Sun Belt Conference rival New Orleans for second. UL carded a two-over-par team 290 score in the final round compared to 292 scores for Rice and UNO, which wound up tied with Central Arkansas for third.
Sophomores Philipp Fendt and Andrew Noto posted two-under 70 and one-under 71 rounds respectively and senior Kyle Pritchard posted an even-par 72 to pace the narrow win. Senior Mark Brockhurst and freshman Ethan Savoy each had a 77 in the final round, but the Cajuns only needed to count one of those scores in a head-up battle with Rice and UNO in the final threesomes.
Noto, the individual leader after the opening day’s first two rounds, finished tied for second overall at five-under 71-69-71—211 for his best collegiate finish. Much of that success came on strong play on the par-fours, where he led the field with a 3.90 scoring average.
Pritchard (73-70-72) and Fendt (77-68-70) both finished at one-under 215 and tied for fifth – a career-best for Pritchard, who led the Carter field with a sterling 4.50 stroke average on the par-fives over three rounds.
Fendt posted his third top-five individual finish of the fall season after a fourth at the Sam Hall USM meet and a tie for third at the Kansas Invitational in UL’s first two fall events. Fendt had finished third at last year’s Carter Plantation event when the Cajuns finished four shots behind Texas State in the team chase.
All three made the All-Tournament team along with medalist Zack Fischer of Texas-Arlington, who won by two shots over Noto and UNO’s Ken Looper with a seven-under 69-73-67—209 score.
“It’s a great way to close out the fall season,” Sliman said, “and to build some momentum heading toward the spring.”
UL opens its spring season Feb. 15-16 at the Oak Hills Invitational hosted by Texas-San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.
